Saddam Hussein, the former leader of Iraq, was executed by hanging. He had been convicted by an Iraqi court of the killings of 148 Shias from the town of Dujail in the 1980s. Iraqi authorities released official footage of the execution to prove that he was dead; but unofficial mobile-phone footage quickly surfaced showing guards taunting Saddam just before his death, further exacerbating ethnic tensions.
