House votes to avert shutdown; inflation cools

1. America’s House of Representatives voted to avert a government shutdown.  Nearly all Democrats and a majority of Republicans approved a temporary funding bill put forward by Mike Johnson, the new House speaker; some hardline conservatives had promised to reject it. The measure contains no military aid for Israel and Ukraine but avoids spending cuts. The bill now goes to the Senate, which has signalled its support.
